Published in the internationally respected journal Zootaxa, the catalogue documents 13,703 species found across the country. This represents nearly 8.25% of the world’s known Lepidoptera species, despite India accounting for only about 2.4% of the Earth’s land area. This extraordinary accomplishment is more than a scientific record—it is an official recognition of India’s rich natural heritage and its global ecological importance.
Why Butterflies Matter to Farmers and Food Security

For over a decade, researchers carried out extensive field surveys, examined museum collections, verified thousands of scientific publications, and corrected taxonomic records.
